Character Information
Name/Alias: Hinata Shouyou
Fandom: Haikyuu!!
Canonpoint: Chapter 148, after the game with Aoba Jousai
Gender: Male
Age: 16
Physical Description: Image here! Hinata is in high school, but he actually looks more like a middle schooler than anything. And standing at about 162 centimeters with a squeaky voice and unruly orange hair, it's no wonder. He has no visible scars though, so he won't have to worry about that.
History: Hinata's wiki page and Hinata's canon history
Personality:
❝ I'm Hinata Shouyou, and I sprouted from the concrete! ❞
The best way to describe Hinata Shouyou is sunny. And much like the sun, he has the sort of relentless and dazzling kind of energy that makes him hard to look away from. He tends to be very friendly, and easy to get along with. Time and time again, he's managed to make fast friends with people like Kenma Kozume and Nishinoya Yuu just moments into meeting them. It's hard to hate Hinata, especially since he spends almost all of his time admiring other people, even if they're someone that actually annoys him a lot, like Kageyama Tobio. He has a lot of optimism and determination when it comes to the future. It's very difficult to catch him saying that he's going to lose, even if he's so nervous that he can barely stand up. Yes, sunny is a good way to describe him. He's easily considered obnoxious with how dazzling and relentless he is, which is why he makes such a good Decoy when he plays volleyball.
Despite his optimism and constant friendliness, though, Hinata also has something of a temper. Although he's mostly friendly with people, it's not hard to rile him up and make him angry just by mentioning his height or poor skills in volleyball. When he met Tsukishima Kei, who is known to be quite rude no matter what he happens to be saying, he doesn't waste any time in insulting him right back and declaring that he was going to defeat him in their upcoming game. However, like mentioned earlier, even if someone annoys him, he has a way of seeing the best in people and admiring them for their natural talents. Like with Tsukishima, he's been known to admire his blocking skills and even goes to him for help with studying when exams threaten to get in the way of volleyball. He recognizes him as a very important member of the team, even if he is incredibly rude and annoying.
Speaking of exams, Hinata is not very bright. He's great at learning new things when it comes to volleyball and improving at an exponential rate, but when it comes to school, he just can't focus. Rather than study, he'd vastly prefer to play volleyball, basically. Only when a possible failed test might put him supplementary classes and get in the way of a summer practice camp does he really start taking studying seriously. At first he begs Tsukishima for help despite how much he doesn't like him, but when it becomes obvious that he wasn't a good teacher, he goes to the new first year manager, Hitoka Yachi. After that, he dedicates himself completely to his studies, and actually improves very quickly. Which only goes to show that Hinata has to ability to quickly improve in anything as long as he puts his mind to it. The only reason he failed his English exam is because he was accidentally one space off for every single one of his answers, but got all of them right anyway, despite the fact that English had been his worst subject when he started.
❝ I may be small, but I can jump! ❞
If you hadn't been able to tell by now, Hinata loves volleyball. He's actually so singularly obsessed with it that you can't often catch him thinking about anything else. And his determination, thirst for victory, and ability to improve constantly makes him a force to be reckoned with. It was when he was in his first year of Middle School that he had just so happened to catch a National game that Karasuno High, the school he would one day attend, was playing in. In it, there was a man who, despite his height, was an amazing ace. He seemed to fly. Ever since that moment, it became his dream to become a "Little Giant" as well. And even though there was no team in his school, he practiced constantly, improving his jumping and spiking for three years before he finally got to play his first game. Even though the odds were against him, and he honestly didn't understand much about volleyball yet, he was determined to make it to the top. This obsession with being at the top doesn't ever stop, even when he inevitably loses.
Hinata is very competitive. Whether they're on his side of the net or the other, he wants to be the best of all. Absolutely everyone who plays volleyball is a rival, and a reason for him to keep improving his abilities. None moreso than his partner, Kageyama Tobio; the demonic setter who destroyed him during his first Middle School game, and then became his teammate in High School. There's no one he admires more than Kageyama when it comes to volleyball, and no one he wants to defeat more. At first, in their first week or so at Karasuno High, they did nothing but fight and belittle each other. And even though they continue to do that forever, they soon learned that in order to be their best during a game, they specifically needed each other. Hinata's speed and instinct for the game (yet lack of experience) and Kageyama's genius for the game (and overwhelming experience) makes them an unstoppable pair. It's their talent and their never-ending envy and need to defeat each other that seems to drive them forward. When it comes to reaching the top, Hinata has stopped saying "I", and mostly uses "We", almost always referring not to the entire team, but to him and Kageyama, despite their constant rivalry and bickering.
I've mentioned Hinata's overwhelming ability to improve before, and it applies to volleyball more than anything. Even though Hinata started his High School career knowing very little about volleyball, he's done nothing but learn and get that much better. He hates to look at himself and realize that he sucks, and will do anything he can just to be the best that he can be. In particular, he's quite insecure when it comes to the fact that he can't do his "freak quicks" without Kageyama. More than anything, he wants to be able to fight on his own, so after losing their first official match against Aoba Jousai, he became obsessed with being able to play without constantly relying on his partner over the summer. Of course, he improved leaps and bounds, and was even able to start spiking Kageyama's tosses with his eyes open, with a little help and personal growth from the setter of course.
Hinata has a lot of pride in his abilities, as well as the abilities of his teammates. This pride can easily lead him to anger at times, mostly towards himself, but sometimes towards others as well. When he knows how skilled they are, he doesn't tolerate any sort of hesitation or laziness, particularly when it comes to his partner. He thinks that Kageyama is incredible, so when they were practicing the revised freak quick and Kageyama became apprehensive for just a second that he might not be able to do it, Hinata yelled at him. Even though Hinata isn't the most skilled person at volleyball, and has quite a long way to go if he wants to be the best, he's not afraid to scold or encourage others when they feel anxiety. He even encourages Tsukishima on occasion, much to his disapproval. Even outside of volleyball, Hinata is not afraid to encourage others optimistically, like he did with Yachi when it came to managing the club. He just hates to see someone say "I can't do it," or "I give up."
❝ Before my eyes, it blocks my path. A high, high wall; what sort of scene is on the other side? What will I be able to see there? "The View from the Top;" A scenery that I will never see on my own. ❞
When it comes to his friends and teammates, Hinata is very loyal and affectionate. He doesn't hesitate to tell them how much he admires them, or just how thankful he is for them. He's been known to embarrass his friends at times with how open he is about his appreciation for them. And because he's actually quite social and charismatic, he makes friends easily, and he wastes no time in showing them the same sort of affection that he might for a friend he's had for years. For example, when he played against Inuoka Sou, he quickly became friends with him during the game, and didn't hesitate to excitedly sing praise for the guy even though he'd only known him for the course of a few practice games. Kenma is of course another good example. The quiet setter of Nekoma is someone that Hinata admires and genuinely looks forward to seeing constantly. They even text when they're away from each other. It seems that for most of the characters in the series, it's hard to genuinely dislike this energetic jumping bean.
Within his team, and even outside of it, Hinata has a lot of friends. It seems like most of his classmates love him, and he has plenty of friends from middle school. As stated earlier, he's very loyal when it comes to his relationships. Even people he constantly gets annoyed at are often considered friends to him. Kageyama is very likely his best friend, despite their constant bickering, even though you won't ever catch either of them admitting it in a million years. And aside from his friends, he's also very loving and affectionate towards his family, his younger sister Hinata Natsu in particular. Even though it's kind of embarrassing, he accepts her excessively pink obentou without a single complaint, and hugs her when he comes home.
In social situations, Hinata can be very loud and quite inarticulate at times. He's easily excited, and tends to make loud squeaky noises whenever he's faced with something new, surprising, painful, or vaguely interesting. In his excitement, he'll often lose the ability to describe things as well, often using terms like "guwaa!" and "gaah!!" as descriptors for things that make him happy. With Kageyama, he'll even make up strange words to describe the various sorts of spikes that they perform. And when he's particularly excited, it almost sounds like he stops speaking Japanese altogether, as often shown with his interactions with Inuoka and Yachi. Even though most people can't seem to understand what his garbled squawking means, they can't help but admire his unbridled enthusiasm.
Despite all his confidence, and all of his determination, it's actually quite easy to make Hinata catastrophically anxious. Things like too much pressure, intimidating people, tall people, and even certain expressions have the ability to send him straight to the bathroom due to gastric distress. He tends to always get the pre-game jitters no matter how much he thinks he's going to win, but has become better about handling it as time goes on. He's actually become quite nervous about going into bathrooms, since all of the scary encounters with intimidating players seems to happen there. It's where he met Kageyama, for example. And last time he went to the bathroom before a game during the spring competition, he somehow managed to come in contact with every single guy he was afraid of in his upcoming games. However, his nervousness and gastric distress is easily dispelled if he's ever insulted by the guys who are causing his anxiety. When Wakatoshi Ushijima insulted the Karasuno team, for instance, he immediately lost all of his nervousness and replaced it with pure confidence and pride.
No matter where he goes, Hinata is described as childish, obnoxious, too loud, tiny, and incredible. There's no question that it's hard to look away from this big dreamer, and despite his yearning for being an ace like his hero, it makes him the perfect decoy. When the apparent embodiment of the sun is spiking with overwhelming power, it's easy to take your eyes off of the other six players on the court. The same seems to go for when he's off the court as well. Even though he's small, and at times easy to underestimate, he stands out. And his occasional intensity when it comes to volleyball tends to unnerve and even scare people, despite how often he's compared to a squirrel. Everyone who watches him play can see that if he meets his full potential, he'll be invincible.
Abilities: Hinata has absolutely no superhuman abilities, unless you want to count how fast he can run to the bathroom during emergencies. However, he boasts plenty of very human, albeit incredible abilities when it comes to athletic ability and volleyball.
Speed: It might be because he jogs every day and has to bike up a mountain every day to get to school from his house, but Hinata is extremely fast. Not only can he run for miles without getting that tired, but he can get from one side of the court to the other in an instant. When he spikes, he's almost impossible to catch unless you've become accustomed to his speed, which isn't easy to do.
Stamina: Hinata would be nothing without his overwhelming ability to keep going. Even after quite a few games with Nekoma, he was still rearing to go. The rest of his teammates were exhausted, but it seemed like he didn't need to rest at all, despite the fact that he jumps and runs (arguably) more than anybody else. So not only can he keep playing volleyball, but he can run for miles, practice for hours, and can get up no matter how many times he falls.
Jumping Ability: After years of trying and constant practicing at jumping, it's almost more appropriate to say that Hinata can fly. Even though he's tiny, he can block even the tallest spiker's ball, even if it takes a lot more effort for him than it might someone taller. The height that Hinata can jump almost seems impossible, sometimes.
Decoy Work: Because of his intense presence, speed, and jumping, Hinata is very good at catching other players' attention. With how he zips around the court, and how readily he'll jump 100% expecting the ball to be there when he spikes, he'll often get many blockers to follow him. This allows the other spikers on the team to hit the ball without anyone blocking. He's often called the "ultimate decoy" because of how perfectly he does it. It's not at all as cool as being an ace, but he's learned to accept it.
Freak Quick: Because of how much of a genius Kageyama is, he's able to pin-point toss the ball straight into a spiker's hand. However, only Hinata has the speed to keep up with it. When the ball flies into his hand, and gets slammed on the other side of the court, it happens in the blink of an eye, and is almost impossible to block because of how it functions. Because Hinata simply jumps wherever there are no blockers, and Kageyama can bring the ball to wherever he is, it's hard to deal with. He trusts Kageyama completely to bring the ball to him, so until recently, he'd close his eyes while jumping.
After they were defeated by Aoba Jousai though, Hinata decided that he wanted to be able to control the spike while he was spiking it, so he started to open his eyes. Of course, this meant that he'd often miss the spike. So he spent the entire summer becoming faster, becoming more observant, and just that much better at spiking. Meanwhile Kageyama practiced being able to toss a ball that was still as quick as it was, but would stop directly in front of Hinata, making it easier to catch and control. This improved freak quick made them just that much more powerful together on the court, practically unstoppable.
